Raising Readers…

This morning my local library branch posted the following image on Facebook:

(And yes, I follow my library on FB…so should you)

parents

I have loved this quote for years, but especially more so since I became a parent. Every month Sammie brings home a Scholastic book club order and every month we buy her a few new books. Since I’m now a Stay At Home Momma, our book budget is drastically diminished but there almost always a few lower price ($1 or $1.99) books in each order. Even if we only get two or three new books, each time the order comes in it is an exciting day for Sammie. (and for me, if I’m being honest)

These book order days look like this:

reading

Aren’t they cute? And I truly hope to have an entire childhood of these types of pictures of them – reading. And I hope the prevalence of books and reading in our home help them fall in love with reading the way Brett and I have.

Tot Tuesday: The Snow Ball by David Steinberg

Welcome to Tot Tuesday – a weekly feature where I review and share a children’s book. Children’s books are such a big part of my life now that I want to share them for other parents, grandparents or anyone who buys a child a book with the hope of instilling a lifelong love of reading.

The books I review and share are generally books from my daughter’s bookshelves and her library selections. She generally selects library books by a very technical method of grabbing every book in her reach and shoving them into the bag we bring with us. Thus, each week will be a surprising post.

The Snow Ball by David Steinberg – This is an adorable tale of a snow day for a family of polar bears. The illustrations are adorable and the text is cute. Sammie’s favorite part and mine too, is the winter outdoor activities this story covers. The polar bears have a snowball fight, the go sledding, and they ice skate. They even finish the day with a warm beverage before being tucked into bed by mom and dad.

This is the perfect late-fall or early winter book to get kids excited for snow!

Tot Tuesday: The Witches’ Ball by David Steinberg

Welcome to Tot Tuesday – a weekly feature where I review and share a children’s book. Children’s books are such a big part of my life now that I want to share them for other parents, grandparents or anyone who buys a child a book with the hope of instilling a lifelong love of reading.

The Witches’ Ball by David Steinberg - This is an adorable book for the spooky month of October. The words are tongue twistingly good…causing Sammie to laugh hysterically each time we trip over them. It helps if you do a little sing-songy when you say them…they roll of the tongue easier.

The illustrations are bright and fun – witches dancing around cauldrons and flying around on brooms. The pages have multiple shiny/metallic aspects providing a twinkle as you turn each page. This is an adorable book for Halloween – not scary, but fun and festive.

Tot Tuesday: The Great Dog Wash by Shellie Braeuner

Welcome to Tot Tuesday – a weekly feature where I review and share a children’s book. Children’s books are such a big part of my life now that I want to share them for other parents, grandparents or anyone who buys a child a book with the hope of instilling a lifelong love of reading.

The Great Dog Wash by Shellie Braeuner, Robert Neubecker (Illustrator) – This isn’t a board book but Sammie wandered to the next aisle over at the library and HAD to have a big kid book before she would leave. I’m not sure she could have picked a better book either.

This is a super cute story of a bunch of kids trying to wash the dogs in their neighborhood. Midway through the dog wash a cat shows up causing all the dogs to chase after it and get dirty again. About a bazillion dogs are represented on these pages – muts, fancy dogs, store bought.

The illustrations are wonderful and the text is creative and lyrical. Even though this book is targeted to kids older than Sammie I think it’s perfect for preschoolers too!

Tot Tuesday: Gallop!: A Scanimation Picture Book by Rufus Butler Seder

Welcome to Tot Tuesday – a weekly feature where I review and share a children’s book. Children’s books are such a big part of my life now that I want to share them for other parents, grandparents or anyone who buys a child a book with the hope of instilling a lifelong love of reading.

Gallop!: A Scanimation Picture Book by Rufus Butler Seder – This book has hologram-like pages that make the animals on the pages appear to run, leap, and move around. It’s a pretty cool thing in a children’s book! Sammie is obsessed with animals – the sounds they make, the places the live, what they eat, and anything else she can ask about so this book is perfect for her.

Sammie loves reading this book over and over. We make the sounds for each animal as we watch them move across the page. She asks why some of the animals have wings while some hop or gallop.

Tot Tuesday: Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers

Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers, Marla Frazee (illustrator) – If you are looking for a cute book to start showing diversity at a young age this is the book for you! Not only does it show different races, ethnicities, and all genders interacting with babies but it also shows diversity among babies. You see babies being rocked, held in wraps, and walked in strollers. Some babies are being fed by breast while others are fed by bottle or spoon.

As a parent I loved this book and Sammie enjoyed it too!

Tot Tuesday: Spring is Here by Tarō Gomi

Welcome to Tot Tuesday – a weekly feature where I review and share a children’s book. Children’s books are such a big part of my life now that I want to share them for other parents, grandparents or anyone who buys a child a book with the hope of instilling a lifelong love of reading.

Spring is Here by Tarō Gomi – This story starts out with a little calf and slowly as the pages turn, his back becomes a field. The reader watches as the field changes from season to season. At the end of the story the calf returns a year older and bigger.

The illustrations are bright but basic, so this would be a great story for younger toddlers. I think this would be a fun book for even infants because of the colors. While it’s a short book, even for toddlers, it is a cute story about seasons and how time lets us grow.
